Why Bali Is a Top Choice for Fitness Retreats

I’ve been to Bali SIX times, most recently in September 2026 – to say I love it is an understatement! The appeal is clear: warm weather year-round, fresh healthy food on every corner, and a culture steeped in spirituality. It’s no wonder Bali’s yoga, wellness, and fitness retreats are so popular.

If you’re looking to build strength, kickstart a new exercise routine, or combine workouts with a bit of surfing and sunshine, Bali has a fitness retreat for you. It’s not just a tropical backdrop for Instagram photos (although it does this pretty well!). It’s genuinely one of the best places in the world for a fitness holiday. Here’s why:

A built-in wellness culture

Bali’s wellness scene is legendary. After a tough workout, you can balance things out with yoga, massage, or a protein-packed smoothie. The island makes it easy to look after your whole self – not only your physical body, with healing recovery practices and health-conscious meals.

Affordable luxury

One of the biggest draws of Bali is its incredible value for money. A week-long retreat with accommodation, meals, and daily workouts might cost less than just the program fee in Europe or the US. You can enjoy high-quality fitness training and spa-like living, without a high-end price tag.

Healthy food everywhere

Fuelling your workouts is easy in Bali. Think smoothie bowls loaded with tropical fruit, nourishing salads, and local veggies spiced to perfection. Most cafes cater to health-conscious travellers, so whether you’re after plant-based meals, protein-packed plates, or a post-workout green juice, you’ll find plenty of delicious options.

Year-round sunshine and stunning scenery

Imagine running along the beach at sunrise, hiking through jungle trails, or cooling down with stretches overlooking rice terraces. Training here is an absolute joy. Why? Because Bali makes it feel like an adventure. The weather is warm all year, so why not swap your gym’s fluorescent lights for natural sunshine and fresh air?

If this sounds like a fun way to spend your annual leave or sabbatical, then here are my top picks for the best fitness retreats in Bali…

1. Active Escapes Bali (Canggu & Padang Padang)

Active Escapes offers fitness retreats in both Canggu and Padang Padang (along with Lombok, Bali’s neighbouring island). You’ll enjoy a high-energy week of daily fitness sessions, yoga, surf lessons, obstacle courses, ice baths, and massages. Plus, healthy meals and pool time are part of their all-inclusive packages.

Cost: a 7-day retreat starts at around $1750 for a hotel room, $2150 for a shared villa room or $2650 for a private room.

If you’re looking for a fun, supportive group atmosphere with varied daily activities, recovery, and a social vibe, this is the fitness retreat for you.

2. COMO Shambhala Estate (Ubud)

COMO Shambala Estate is nestled in the lush jungle above Ubud. It’s set across 23 tranquil acres with sacred pools and magical architecture.

It offers all sorts of different retreats but their “Be Active” option is best for fitness fans. Choose from yoga, Pilates, guided walks, meditation, Qigong, acupuncture, spa therapies, and healthy meals tailored to your needs.

Cost: a 7-day retreat starts at around $4729 staying in shared accommodation.

For people wanting a high-end, holistic reset paired with nature and luxury, COMO is ideal.

3. REVIVO Wellness Resort (Nusa Dua)

REVIVO is a sleek, spa-centered resort that combines luxury and healing (without the expensive price tag). It offers a wide roster of group fitness classes like yoga, Pilates, HIIT, boxing, aqua sculpt, and Muay Thai. Plus, there are epic spa facilities featuring Vichy showers, contrast plunge pools, hydrojets, saunas, steam rooms, and tailored treatments via their Remissio spa system.

Cost: a 3-day retreat starts at around $850 for a private garden suite.

REVIVO is ideal for anyone who likes variety and spa-level comfort, at a reasonable price.

4. Escape Haven (Canggu, Women-only)

Escape Haven is a luxe women-only fitness retreat nestled near Canggu. You get a premium workout experience with a flexible, boutique feel and access to cultural excursions.

Expect a comfortable balance of fitness sessions like yoga, boxing, surfing, or Pilates, plus spa treatments and relaxed excursions rooted in Balinese culture and mindfulness.

Cost: a 7-day fitness retreat starts at around $2295 for shared room or $2595 for a private.

Escape Haven is perfect for women who want wellness, fitness, and relaxation, without rigid routines.

5. Savage Flow Bali (Canggu & Other Locations)

Savage Flow is focused on raw energy and wild Bali spirit. You’ll train outdoors and explore the island too – think boxing, padel, diving, surfing, yoga, and motorbike adventures. There are even live-aboard boat trips to Raja Ampat and Komodo Island.

A fitness retreat will typically revolve around your chosen activity – boxing, padel, or diving. You’ll also benefit from technique drills, surfing, yoga, bootcamp sessions, breathwork, and exploring waterfalls and rice fields.

Cost: not available publicly, enquire on their website for a quote (link below).

Savage Flow retreats are perfect for adventure lovers who want to train hard and explore further afield.

Exploring Indonesia’s Islands: I did a live-aboard boat trip to Komodo Island a few years back and it was incredible. The views along the way were stunning, I got to sleep on the deck under the stars, and even swam in an insanely picturesque volcanic crater lake (an extinct one of course!). If you get the chance, I highly recommend exploring the less touristy islands beyond Bali like Lombok, Sumbawa, Komodo, and Flores.

6. Wanderlust Fitness Retreats (Canggu)

Wanderlust is an epic Bali fitness retreat with party vibes. Set in trendy Canggu, you’ll train right by the beach, with rice-field views and easy access to trendy local hotspots.

Expect an action-packed week with group training in the massive Wanderlust Fitness Village – we’re talking barbells, sled tracks, muscle-up rigs, the works! Plus sunrise volcano hikes, surf lessons at Batu Bolong, and recovery in their huge sauna, lap pool, ice baths, and jacuzzi. Huge parties are held on the opening and closing nights, plus lots of social activities in between.

Cost: an 8-day fitness retreat starts at around $1850 for a shared room or $2350 for a private.

If you want a holiday that combines hardcore fitness training and plenty of partying, Wanderlust is the place for you.

7. Bliss Sanctuary for Women (Seminyak & Ubud)

Bliss is a women-only sanctuary focused on wellness, empowerment, and luxury in a nurturing setting. Their ‘active retreat package’ includes 1:1 personal training, unlimited gym access, eco-bike tours through rice fields, spa time, and healthy meals crafted for rejuvenation and self-care.

Cost: a 7-day fitness retreat starts at around $3000 for a shared room.

The Bliss Sanctuary is best for solo women wanting tailored fitness, self-care, and side trips in a supportive, all-female environment.

Where To Stay in Bali for Fitness Retreats

When you’re deciding between workout retreats in Bali, the where is just as important as the what. Different parts of the island have their own vibe, so it helps to know what you’re signing up for before booking. Depending on the type of energy you’re looking for, these are the best locations for fitness retreats…

Trendy Fitness Vibes = Canggu

Canggu has become the beating heart of Bali’s fitness scene. It’s packed with CrossFit boxes, boutique gyms, surf schools, and smoothie cafés on almost every corner.

Retreats here usually blend strength training with yoga, surfing, and recovery sessions. The community is social and international, so if you want to meet like-minded people who care about health, fitness, and the odd sunset cocktail, Canggu is the place.

Spiritual Wellness = Ubud

If Canggu is all about energy, then Ubud is about balance. Surrounded by lush jungle and rice terraces, it’s the go-to spot for retreats that mix fitness with mindfulness. Think yoga flows, meditation, detox programs, and jungle hikes.

Ubud is set inland and attracts a more spiritual crowd. So if you want your workouts paired with breathwork, plant-based meals, and spa treatments, this is your match.

Surf & Sweat = Uluwatu

Perched on Bali’s dramatic southern cliffs, Uluwatu has a raw, adventurous feel. It’s big on surf fitness, calisthenics, and outdoor training, with a slower pace compared to Canggu.

Retreats here often include sunrise yoga on the cliffs, surf lessons, and functional training circuits overlooking the ocean. If you love mixing fitness with the thrill of the waves, Uluwatu won’t disappoint.

Luxury = Seminyak

Seminyak is the place for luxury fitness and wellness in Bali. Here you’ll find retreats in five-star hotels with fully kitted out gyms and exclusive high-end spas. They offer premium workout experiences, personalised to your health goals. Think gym sessions and functional fitness training with beach runs, luxury spa treatments, and lots of downtime by the sea.

Seminyak is stylish and upscale so it’s ideal if you want your retreat to feel like a holiday with plenty of pampering on the side.

Start Planning Your Bali Fitness Retreat

Have I convinced you to try a Balinese workout retreat asap? Excellent. Then let’s talk about next steps…

I’ve been going to Bali for the last 15+ years, so I know the travel logistics inside and out. Here are some practical tips to help you plan the perfect trip…

Best time to go

The best time of year for fitness retreats in Bali is the dry season, from April to October. You’ll get warm, sunny days that are perfect for outdoor workouts, surfing, and exploring (without the heavy rains).

The wet season (November to March) is still warm, but expect daily downpours that can dampen plans if you’re training outside. If soggy workouts aren’t your thing, check out these Autumn retreats for alternative destination ideas in November and December.

Travel logistics

  • Getting there: fly into Denpasar Ngurah Rai Airport – there are direct flights from Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and the rest of Asia.
  • Visas: Most travellers can get a 30-day visa on arrival, which costs 500,000 Indonesian rupiah (around $35/£23).
  • Insurance: Make sure you have travel insurance that covers fitness activities (like surfing or hiking), not just medical emergencies.
  • Airport transfers: Many retreats include transfers in their package, but if not, book a reliable driver in advance for a smoother arrival. I used Booking.com to arrange airport pickups during my last two visits and the experiences were seamless.

What to pack

Bring plenty of activewear – super-light and quick-dry materials are best in Bali’s humidity. Plus swimwear for beach and pool sessions, and a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated.

Don’t forget high-SPF sunscreen, insect repellent, and a light rain jacket if you’re traveling outside the dry season. A pair of trainers and flip-flops will cover most activities.

Next Steps

Bali offers way more than beaches and sunsets – it’s one of the best places in the world to combine travel with fitness training. From CrossFit in Canggu to jungle yoga in Ubud, there’s a workout retreat here to match your vibe.

So, how do we make a Balinese fitness retreat happen for you? Firstly, decide what you want to get out of it. Then research the retreats that match your needs. And finally, book your flights and start getting excited!

With year-round sunshine, nourishing food, and a culture of wellness, it’s easy to see why so many people come to Bali for a reset. But please don’t miss out on the other experiences it has to offer!

Bali is a truly unique island and one of my favourite places in the world. Beyond the amazing retreat centres and wellness hotels, there are temples, rice terraces, waterfalls, spas, and epic beaches. The people, food, art, and cultural traditions make it well worth exploring before and after your retreat.
